The Transport Accident Investigation Commission is investigating an accident involving the derailment of a passenger train on the Johnsonville Line North of Wellington at about 7:20pm on 6 June 2026.

It is understood that the train derailed between Khandallah and Box Hill stations resulting in significant damage to the train and injuries to people on board.

The Chief Investigator of Accidents Louise Cook has appointed an investigation team, who will be on site as soon as practicable tonight [EDS: 6 June 2026].

“Getting information is vital, so we’re keen to hear as soon as possible from people who were on the train or who saw the accident occur. We’re especially interested in receiving photos or videos,” said Mrs Cook.

TAIC’s email address is info@taic.org.nz.

“Our initial focus is on evidence that could disappear or change – including memories that are fresh in people’s minds and anything that may be affected by the environmental conditions tonight.”

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission opens an inquiry when it believes the circumstances of an accident or incident have - or are likely to have - significant implications for transport safety, or when the inquiry may allow the Commission to make findings or recommendations to improve transport safety. The Commission's purpose is to improve transport safety by avoiding repeat accidents, rather than by ascribing blame.
