Searching, sorting and filtering this website

8 Oct 2017

This site can be searched a number of ways depending on the content you want to search:

1. Search - Content [click to go]

The most basic search covers all of this website's pages. Each Investigation and each Recommendation are summarised on their own page. It does not search any website documents e.g. the full Investigation report.

Word Search

To find pages that contain a word enter the text in the keyword box. The search is not case sensitive but cannot search for part words or wildcard characters. The results will be sorted by relevance.

To find pages that contain all of a set of words enter them separated by a space e.g. Hastings Train.

To find pages that contain one or more of a set of words enter them seperated by the keyword OR (in capitals) e.g. fire OR fires.

To find pages that contain a phrase, type double quotes (") at the start and finish of the phrase. e.g. to avoid South Auckland finding numerous references of Auckland & South in the same document enter "South Auckland".

2. Search - Document [click to go]

Use this tab to search the full contents of the PDF investigation reports since 1999, and all corporate documents available on this website.

To find documents that contain a word enter the text in the keyword box. To refine your keyword search use the above Search - Document Word Search instructions.

3. Searching Investigations [click to go]

Use this page to search summarised information on every current and closed inquiry. The inquiries can be searched and then sorted in a number of ways.

To find Inquiry summaries that contain a word enter the text in the keyword box. To refine your keyword search use the above Search - Document Word Search instructions.

To search for a specific Inquiry - type the Inquiry Number (e.g. AO-2015-002) in to the keyword field. Your can also enter Legacy Inquiry Numbers (e.g. 10-001). You will need to use the full number, including all the dashes, not part of it.  The numbers are equivalent, so AO-2003-003 is equivalent to Legacy Inquiry Number 03-003.  Longer form numbers signify the mode with the first letter, and for both short and long form numbers the first digit of the last group denotes the mode: so A / 0 = aviation, R / 1 = rail, M / 2 = marine.  The longer form middle group is the calendar year of occurence, represented by the two-digit first number group in the shorter form.

To search for the recipients of Inquiry-related documents, use the searching recommendations and type your search words into the recipient search box.

The Status for an Inquiry can be either "Current" or "Closed".
  • Current means that the Inquiry is currently being worked on by the Commission.
  • Closed means that the Commission has completed its Inquiry.
The Inquiries listed are initially sorted by Occurrence Date. They can be sorted by the Accident Number, Occurrence date, and Published Date columns in either direction.
  • Arrows next to a column header indicate the current sort direction.
  • To sort the Inquiries table by a column, click the column's heading.
  • Click again to sort in the other direction.

4. Searching Recommendations [click to go]

Use this to search every open and closed recommendation.  The recommendations can be searched and then sorted in a number of ways.

To find Recommendations that contain a word enter the text in the keyword box. To refine your keyword search use the above Search - Document Word Search instructions.

To search for a specific Recommendation - type the Recommendation Number (e.g. 015/17) in to the keyword field. NB: you will need to use the full number, including all the slash, not part of it.

To search for the recipients, type the recipient name into the recipient search box. The system will search for the entered text in Recommendation's Recipients. See the Recipient names to use.

The Status for an Recommendation can be either "Open" or "Closed".
  • Open means that the Recommendation has been published, but the recipient has not yet actioned it.
  • Closed means that the Recommendation has been: implemented by the Recipient, cancelled, or superseded.

The Recommendations listed are initially sorted by Made date. They can be sorted by the Made date, Closed date, and Recipient columns in either direction.

  • Arrows next to a column header indicate the current sort direction.
  • To sort the Recommendations table by a column, click the column's heading.
  • Click again to sort in the other direction.
