The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has opened an inquiry into this afternoon’s (Monday 18 January) passenger vessel fire in the Eastern Bay Of Plenty, off Whakatane.
Two investigators are expected to arrive in Whakatane about mid-morning tomorrow (Tuesday 19 January) to begin interviewing those involved, gather information on the vessel and its operation, and to examine the vessel’s remains if possible.
The purpose of the Commission’s inquiry will be to identify the circumstances and causes of the accident with a view to helping prevent similar accidents in the future.
