On 23 February 2018 the Commission recommended that the Directeur D’exploitation at Ponant review the safety management system on board L’Austral and upgrade it to ensure that the standards of voyage planning, the standards of navigation and the level of bridge resource management met the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation and followed the guidelines in leading industry publications.

Ponant’s Voyage Planning procedure was reviewed on 15 December 2017. This new procedure has been communicated to all Captains.
Specific BRM training sessions provided by the French Marine Academy have been rolled out, starting from January 2017. To date 21 Ponant officers have undergone the training, 13 more are scheduled to undergo this training in 2018.
